Kampong Hyderabad

Mr Tee Kim Leng asked the Prime Minister whether he has received a letter dated 26th January, 1962, from the villagers of Kampong Hyderabad, off Hyderabad Road, whether and what action has been taken to prevent the blockade by the Army authorities of the only means of access of the villagers to their houses, and with what result.

Mr Lee Kuan Yew: I have received the letter. The letter stated that the Army Authorities intended to erect a fence along their boundary which would deprive the kampong of the use of the present access footpath running through Army land on to a War Department road called Hyderabad Road.

Representations have been made to the Army Authorities for alternative access and the Army Authorities have since bulldozed and graded a road trace on their land as an alternative access for the kampong. This new access connects the kampong with Alexandra Terrace and the main Pasir Panjang Road.

The Land Office is also pursuing the possibility of providing an additional pedestrian access to Alexandra Road for the kampong dwellers.
