Mr Lin You Eng asked the Minister for Education in 1962 (a) how many Nanyang University graduates were recruited (i) into the Government services and (ii) to teach in Government and Government-aided secondary schools; and (b) how many graduates were rejected in each case.

Mr Yong Nyuk Lin: Mr Speaker, Sir, may I suggest to the Member for Moulmein that the first part of his question "how many Nanyang University graduates were recruited into Government services in 1962" should be addressed to my colleague, the Minister for Finance, who will, I am sure, be pleased to supply the answers when the question is put to him?

As for Nanyang University graduates appointed to teach in Government and Government-aided secondary schools in 1962, the answer is 98. The breakdown is as follows: Government secondary schools 26 Government-aided secondary schools 72

The number not selected for teaching appointments in 1962 was 62. However, 53 others who were considered suitable for teaching appointments were put on the reserve list for 1962 pending vacancies. Of these, 29 have since been appointed to fill vacancies in 1963.
