Mr Lin You Eng asked the Minister for Education in 1962 (a) how many University of Singapore graduates were recruited (i) into the Government services and (ii) to teach in Government and Government-aided secondary schools; and (b) how many graduates were rejected in each case.

Mr Yong Nyuk Lin: As in the previous question, may I request the Member for Moulmein for the second time to direct the first part of his question to my colleague, the Minister for Finance, if he desires information regarding the number of University of Singapore graduates recruited into Government services in 1962?

As regards the number of University of Singapore graduates appointed to teach in Government and Government-aided secondary schools in 1962, the answer is 44. The breakdown is as follows: Government secondary schools 28 Government-aided secondary schools 16

No University of Singapore graduate desiring to teach has had his application rejected because the number of applications is less than the number required for ideal staffing in English medium secondary schools.
