Mr Speaker: Hon. Members are required to propose and second candidates for election as Senators to the Senate of the Parliament of Malaysia.
The Prime Minister: Mr Speaker, I propose that Mr Ko Teck Kin and Mr Ahmad bin Haji Taff be elected as Senators to the Senate.
I hand the Clerk herewith written consent from both the two gentlemen.
Written consent handed in.
Mr Speaker: The statements are in order. Can I have a seconder?
Dr Toh Chin Chye: Mr Speaker, I second it.
Mr Speaker: Any other nominations? The persons nominated are Mr Ko Teck Kin and Mr Ahmad bin Haji Taff.
Hon. Members are entitled to vote for at least two Senators. The names of the candidates will be put to the vote in alphabetical order. Upon the name of each Member being called, he shall voice his vote in the usual way.
The Prime Minister: If I may be of some assistance to the House, I think the procedure for the election of Senators provides that where there are no more than two candidates being nominated, they could be declared as having been elected.
Mr Speaker: There is one provision which relates to the period of office of the Senators, and though both are elected, the Senator obtaining more votes serves for a longer period. It appears therefore that we will have to put the names of these Senators to the vote.
