Mrs C. V. Devan Nair asked the Minister for Social Affairs whether he will take measures to prevent landlords from increasing rents on buildings built after 1947 which do not come within the provisions of the Rent Control Ordinance.
The Minister for Law (Mr E. W. Barker): Mr Speaker, Sir, to extend the provisions of the Rent Control Ordinance to cover new buildings may well discourage private building and development which the Government wishes to encourage. The solution lies in increasing the availability of accommodation.
