Mrs C. V. Devan Nair asked the Minister for Social Affairs whether he will consider introducing amending legislation to provide for repairs and rewiring of premises to be effected by landlords.

The Minister for Law (Mr E. W. Barker): Mr Speaker, Sir, the obligation on the part of a landlord to carry out repairs and rewiring of premises is governed by the terms of the contract of lease or tenancy between the landlord and the tenant. In the absence of an express clause, the landlord should undertake major repairs and the tenant minor repairs.

My Ministry will look into the matter in order to ascertain whether such legislation is feasible or practical.
