Mr Koo Young asked the Minister for Education how many children were admitted to Primary I in 1965, giving figures separately for the four language streams and for government and aided schools.
Mr Ong Pang Boon: Mr Speaker, Sir, no child has yet been admitted into Primary I in 1965.
Mr Koo Young (Thomson): (In Mandarin): Mr Speaker, Sir, according to my knowledge, the enrolment for 1965 ended in July this year. The lists were presented to the Ministry of Education in August. I am sure the Ministry must have got the figures.
Mr Ong Pang Boon: Mr Speaker, Sir, it seems that the Member for Thomson is asking for the number of students to be admitted and not "were admitted" in 1965. If that is the case, then the total number of children to he admitted to Primary 1 in 1965 for the four language streams are: Government schools 38,048 Government-aided schools 19,683
The total number of children to be admitted to Primary I in 1965 for the four language streams is 57,731.
The breakdown figures are as follows: Total Number to be admitted into Schools: Government- Total Stream Government aided Admissions Malay 4,697 - 4,697 Chinese 1,940 14,410 16,350 English 31,399 5,159 36,558 Tamil 12 114 126
