Mr Ong Eng Guan asked the Minister for Finance to state the number of factories which had commenced actual production in the Jurong industrial area by 31st October, 1964, giving name of firm; paid-up capital of the firm; number of workmen employed in the firm as at the latest available date; and percentage of local capital and foreign capital of the firm.

Dr Goh Keng Swee: There are 19 firms in production in the Jurong Industrial Estate. The paid-up capital comes to $41 .3 million. Sixty seven per cent of the subscribed capital belongs to our local businessmen, 33 per cent comes from overseas. The number of workers in employment at the last count made in August this year was 1,851. The present total is likely to exceed 2,000. In addition to this, some 2,600 workers are employed in various construction works.

For the sake of clarity, I should mention that not all the firms in Jurong are pioneer industries nor are all pioneer industries in production located in Jurong. In fact, the majority of pioneer industries in production are located outside Jurong. As I stated in my Budget Address, 43 pioneer firms are in production, involving a total capital investment of $132.5 million and the creation of 4,195 new jobs as at the end of August this year.

I attach a Schedule* setting out the details of firms in production in Jurong.
