Mr S. Rajoo asked the Minister for Culture and Social Affairs (a) what was the total collection of books in each of the official languages in the National Library as at 31st December, 1966; and (b) what percentages of the votes allocated for the purchase of books in 1965 and 1966 were expended.

Mr Fong Sip Chee (for the Minister for Culture): Sir, the total collection of books in each of the official languages in the National Library as at 31st December last year is as follows: Malay... 33,018 Chinese... 65,468 Tamil... 18,264 English... 168,955 ------- Total... 285,705. =======

With regard to part (b) of the question, 100 per cent of the votes allocated for the purchase of books in 1965 and 1966 were expended.
