Mr Teong Eng Siong asked the Minister for Culture and Social Affairs what is the Government's attitude to the proposed Malaysian-Indonesian common spelling system for the Malay Language.
Inche Othman Bin Wok: The Government of Singapore has an open mind on the proposed Malaysian-Indonesian common spelling system for the Malay language. Singapore is not represented in the Committee set up to work out a common Malaysian-Indonesian common spelling system, but has her own Spelling Committee of 11 persons appointed on 26th January, 1966, by the Minister for Culture and Social Affairs, to study and bring up to date the Malay spelling system in the Republic. The Committee consists of the Republic's prominent Malay scholars. At present, the Committee is studying the report of the Malaysian-Indonesian Spelling Committee with a view to improving its own spelling system.
