The Minister of State for the Prime Minister's Department (Tuan Haji Yaacob Bin Mohamed): (In Malay): Mr Speaker, Sir, I beg to move,
That this Parliament, pursuant to subsection (2) of section 61 of the Road Traffic Ordinance, 1961 (No. 26 of 1961), resolves that the Highway Code published as Notification No. S 256 in the Subsidiary Legislation Supplement No. 80 to the Gazette of 29th December, 1967, as contained in Paper S.L. 1 of 1968, be approved.
Sir, the previous Highway Code was issued in 1949 and is very much out of date. It is therefore necessary to bring out a revised Highway Code.
The new Highway Code was prepared in consultation with the Traffic Police, the Ministry of Culture, the Solicitor-General's Office, the R.O.V. and the Automobile Association of Singapore.
The Highway Code is a code of conduct for all road users. It is intended to make them aware of their responsibilities while using the roads and they should follow the advice and guidance given in it. Observance of the Highway Code will go a long way towards reducing the number of accidents and I urge all road users to play their part in contributing towards safer driving.
Question put, and agreed to.
Resolved,
That this Parliament, pursuant to subsection (2) of section 61 of the Road Traffic Ordinance, 1961 (No. 26 of 1961), resolves that the Highway Code published as Notification No. S 256 in the Subsidiary Legislation Supplement No. 80 to the Gazette of 29th December, 1967, as contained in Paper S.L. 1 of 1968, be approved.
