Official Report, 6 May 1968, Vol 27, Issue 1 · Open in the reader (summaries, search, filters)
To get our people better prepared and to participate more in the immense national effort required in the crucial years ahead, the mass media of Radio, Television and publications will be improved and expanded. The Library, the Museum, the Printing Office together with Radio and Television will not only inform, entertain and educate but will also stimulate patriotism, public-spiritedness and the importance of increased productivity. An appreciation for dancing, music, art and other cultural and artistic activities will be assiduously encouraged especially amongst the young.
The Museum which will now come under the Ministry of Science and Technology will be modernised to serve as an educational centre displaying in vivid manner the rich political, social and economic history not only of Singapore but of the whole region of which we are the fulcrum.
Our Library facilities will be expanded. Work on a branch library will start later in the year. Mobile library services will reach more people.
The magnitude of the tasks ahead, and the need to carry the people with us in the new policies to meet these tasks increases the need for good mass communication media. Television and Radio will be elevated into a separate Division within the Ministry of Culture under a separate Permanent Secretary.
