Mr Teong Eng Siong asked the Minister for the Environment when his Ministry proposes to build a hawkers centre in the Sembawang Constituency.

The Minister for the Environment (Mr Lim Kim San): Mr Speaker, Sir, the Government has allocated $10 million for the construction of hawkers centres. These centres will be built in areas to serve the `needs of workers for cooked food, to relieve congestion by street hawkers, and to control water pollution. While we are concentrating on the urban areas where the problem of hawking is more acute, we are not neglecting the rural areas. Wherever there is a real need for one, a hawkers centre will be built.

The Member for Sembawang may be pleased to note that the Ministry proposes to build a cooked food centre near Chong Pang Police Station. A site has been earmarked for this purpose, and the Hawkers Branch and the P.W.D, are now working out the details.
