Mr Ng Kah Ting asked the Minister for Home Affairs and Education if he will ascertain from the Industrial Training Board the breakdown figures of students who successfully completed the various Industrial Training Board courses in 1975 and the number of the graduates who have obtained employment in the jobs for which they have been trained.
The Minister of State for Education (Mr Chai Chong Yii) (for the Minister for Home Affairs and Education): Mr Speaker, Sir, a total of 4,230 students successfully completed Industrial Training Board courses in 1975. Of these, 367 completed the Industrial Technician Course; 2,860 completed the Trade I course; 294 completed the Trade II course; 537 completed the Artisan Course and 172 completed the Hotel and Catering course.
It is not known at present how many of these have obtained employment in jobs for which they have been trained, as surveys to ascertain these will only be mounted in the course of this year. A survey, however, was conducted on those who completed their training in 1974. Of the 3,217 surveyed, 2.646 responded and out of these, 1,079 were called up for National Service. 960 were employed and 607 did not indicate their positions one way or the other. Of the 960 who were employed, 806 (or 84% of those employed) found employment relevant to their training.
Mr Ng Kah Ting (Punggol): In the light of the answer from the Minister of State for Education, can he say whether the ITB will mount a survey in each and every year an all its students who have passed out from the courses organised by the ITB?
Mr Chai Chong Yii: Mr Speaker, Sir, it is the intention of the ITB to carry on monitoring the various year's graduates.
