The Ministry will intensify its technical training programme to upgrade the workforce through expansion of the technical institutions and the establishment of a new commercial/service polytechnic.

Dissemination of Science and Technology Information

The Science Council and the Science Centre will increase activities to foster a greater interest in science and technology among the student population. The Science Council will develop scientific and technological indicators to assist in policy-making.

The Science Centre will set up an Aviation Gallery and a Solar House. The Aviation Gallery will explain the principles connected with the evolution of flight. It will also expound the development of air frames and aircraft systems. The Solar House will be operated by solar energy - a possible future source of energy for Singapore. The Centre will also build a space theatre.

Scientific Services

The Department of Scientific Services will mechanise its routine functions and upgrade the services it provides to other government departments. More sophisticated machines will be acquired over the next five years to overcome the manpower shortage in the department. Metrication

The Metrication Programme is in the final stages of implementation. When the metrication of the retail trade is completed in a year's time, the Board will be dissolved. The enforcement function will then be taken over by the Weights and Measures Office.
