Mr Hwang Soo Jin asked the Minister of Education whether, in deciding on the closure of either a primary or secondary school, it is an established procedure of his Ministry to consult the relevant Member of Parliament and principal.
The Minister of Education (Dr Tony Tan Keng Yam): Mr Speaker, Sir, schools are closed because the enrolment is declining, the buildings and the facilities are sub-standard, or the school sites are acquired by Government for redevelopment projects. The Ministry of Education works in close consultation with the principal of the school that is affected to ensure that his staff and pupils are properly posted to other schools. Where there are unusual circumstances, the relevant Member of Parliament is consulted.
