Mr M.K.A. Jabbar asked the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education what is the position of the former Umar Pulavar Tamil High School at Maxwell Road.
The Minister of State of Education (Dr Tay Eng Soon) (for the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education): Mr Speaker, Sir, I am replying on behalf of my Minister.
Umar Pulavar Tamil High School was closed at the end of 1982, and the remaining 64 pupils and 15 staff were posted to other schools.
With the closure of the school, the site and the buildings were returned to the Land Office in accordance with the lease agreement between the Land Office and the School Management Committee. The school's library collection has been transferred to the Tamil Language Centre, and its furniture and equipment have been distributed to other schools and charitable organizations.
The School Management Committee requested through the Member for Chong Boon for the Tamil Language Centre at the former Beatty School to be renamed the Umar Pulavar Tamil Language Centre. The Ministry has agreed to this and the Centre has been so named since the beginning of this year.
