The following question stood in the name of Mr Lew Syn Pau --

6

Mr Lew Syn Pau: To ask the Minister for Communications whether he will consider changing the basis of computation of road tax for cars and diesel tax for taxis from a monthly to a daily one.

Dr Wang Kai Yuen: Question No. 6, Sir.

The Minister for Communications (Mr Mah Bow Tan): Sir, the Ministry of Communications and the Ministry of Finance have agreed to compute the road tax and diesel tax for all vehicles, including taxis, on a daily instead of monthly basis. This change will result in revenue loss estimated at $2.5 million per annum.

The change in the basis of computation requires an amendment to be made to the Customs Act to enable the Minister for Finance to make rules to pro-rate the collection of diesel tax. The Minister for Finance will be introducing a Bill in Parliament soon to amend the Customs Act.
