Dr Kanwaljit Soin asked the Minister for Education why Indian students were categorised into "Sikh", "Sri Lankan" and "Other Indian" categories in the 1993/94 matriculation form of the National University of Singapore while Malay and Chinese students have only "Malay" and "Chinese" categories respectively.
Dr Ker Sin Tze: In previous matriculation exercise, a sizeable number of Sikh and Sri Lankan students put themselves under the "Others" instead of "Indian" category. This posed difficulties for the collation of student statistics. To facilitate the collation, the present categorization of students has been introduced. The University is reviewing the categorization to see how it can be improved.
