Dr Kanwaljit Soin asked the Minister for Education whether hostels will be built for female students, especially those whose parents are Singaporean expatriates living abroad and wish their daughters to study in Singapore.

Mr Lee Yock Suan: Currently, there are four hostels built with full Government funding that are open to both boys and girls. There are a total of about 340 girls in these hostels. Most of them are foreign students.

In addition to the existing hostels, the Government recently approved a proposal for Nanyang Girls' High School to build boarding facilities for 500 girls. The facilities will be open to girls from all secondary schools in Singapore. Priority will be given to the daughters of Singaporean expatriates living and working overseas.
