RECLAMATION (TUAS VIEW) MOTION

The Senior Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Law (Assoc. Prof. Ho Peng Kee): Mr Speaker, Sir, I beg to move the Motion* standing in the name of the Minister for Law as it appears on the Order Paper.

*The Motion reads as follows:

That this Parliament, in accordance with section 4 of the Foreshores Act (Cap 113) approves the reclamation by the Government of the foreshore and seabed at Tuas View containing an area of about 372.6 ha as shown coloured pink on the plan marked "LAND RECLAMATION PLAN NO 2/95" which is deposited in the Land Office, Singapore.

Sir, Parliament at its sitting on 27th July 1982 approved the reclamation of about 600 ha of foreshore/seabed at Tuas View at a cost of $1,769 million to meet the increasing demand for industrial land in Singapore. The reclamation works were completed sometime in January 1988. The Jurong Town Corporation has estimated that the available stock of industrial land in Singapore would only be able to meet industry needs up to the year 2003.

In order to meet the demand for industrial land beyond 2003, Jurong Town Corporation therefore proposes to reclaim an additional three parcels of land at Tuas View as shown coloured pink on the plan marked "LAND OFFICE RECLAMATION PLAN NO. 2/95", a copy of which is displayed in the Library of this House for the information of hon. Members. The proposed reclamation will yield an additional 372.6 ha of land for industrial development.

Fills required for the proposed reclamation will be imported. The Jurong Town Corporation will be appointed as agent of the Government to oversee the reclamation works. The reclamation works, estimated to cost approximately $825.8 million, will commence in mid 1996 and will be completed by end 1999.
