Encik Harun bin A. Ghani asked the Minister for Communications whether there is a plan to upgrade the bus shelters in Hong Kah Group Representation Constituency and, if so, when will the work start.
The Acting Minister for Communications (RAdm Teo Chee Hean): Mr Speaker, Sir, there are over 3,000 bus shelters in Singapore. Generally, a bus shelter is replaced if it is more than 15 years old and is beyond economic repair.
However, as part of its efforts to improve the quality of our public transport system, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) has embarked on a pilot project to upgrade 100 bus shelters in the city area and along main roads in Ang Mo Kio New Town. The new generation bus stops have been designed taking into account feedback from bus commuters. Apart from the basic function of protecting commuters from inclement weather, these bus stops are also equipped with amenities like fans, water coolers and telephones.
The LTA will monitor bus commuters' response to the new amenities. If the pilot project proves to be a success, it will extend the bus shelter upgrading programme to other areas.
