Mr Hawazi Daipi asked the Minister for Education what are the plans for new schools in Woodlands New Town for the years 1999 to 2003.

RAdm Teo Chee Hean: There are currently 7 primary schools and 5 secondary schools in Woodlands Development Guide Plan (DGP) zone which covers Woodlands New Town.

Two new primary schools will be completed in 1999. They are Evergreen Primary and Woodgrove Primary. The scheduled completion dates are March 1999 and July 1999, respectively. The schools will hold classes at Woodlands Ring Primary in January 1999 pending the completion of the school buildings. With the completion of these two primary schools, there will be sufficient school places up to Year 2001.

Four new secondary schools are proposed for completion from 1999 to 2002. These are Woodlands Site 15 (Woodlands Drive 16) in December 1999, Woodlands Site 25 (Woodlands Street 33) in June 2000, Woodlands Site 34 (Marsiling Road) in December 2000 and Woodlands Site 21A (Woodlands Crescent) in September 2002. These schools have not been named yet.

Planning to meet additional demand for school places after Year 2002 in all DGPs is currently in progress. The needs of Woodlands will be covered under this new school building programme. The projections show that there will be a continual need to plan for more new schools in Woodlands to be completed after Year 2002. Package - OFF-BUDGET PACKAGE (Cols. 359 - 360)
