Mr Zulkifli bin Baharudin asked the Minister for Law, from January to September 1998, how many companies were voluntarily wound up and how many persons were made bankrupt as compared to 1997.

Prof. S. Jayakumar: Based on returns received by the Official Receiver from liquidators of companies in voluntary liquidation, 886 companies were voluntarily wound up from January to September this year, compared to 685 for the same period last year.

1,794 persons were made bankrupt from January to September this year, compared to 1,218 for the same period last year.
