Mr Chiam See Tong asked the Minister for Communications and Information Technology how many taxis were successful in securing COEs each month from May 1999 to February 2000.

Mr Yeo Cheow Tong: Taxi companies are required to bid for COEs only for the registration of new taxis which are additions to their fleet. For replacement taxis, ie, taxis that are registered to replace those that have been de-registered, they are only required to pay Category A Prevailing Quota Premium (PQP). This is a concession given to taxis in view of their public transport role.

For the period between May 1999 to February 2000, a total of 160 new taxis were registered. During the same period, 1,234 replacement taxis were also registered.
