REMUNERATION OF DEPUTY SPEAKERS

The Leader of the House (Mr Wong Kan Seng): Mr Speaker, Sir, I beg to move,

That, pursuant to Article 42(3) of the Constitution of the Republic of Singapore, each Deputy Speaker shall be paid a monthly allowance equal to 12 per cent of the monthly salary and allowances (excluding the annual fixed bonus) payable to the Speaker with effect from 1st April 2002.

Sir, the allowance payable to the Deputy Speakers had been set at a percentage of the actual salary received by the incumbent Speaker. Parliament is requested to approve the motion, which will set the Deputy Speakers' allowance rate to 12% of the Speaker's part-time remuneration.
