Mr Steve Chia Kiah Hong asked the Minister for Education if he will give a breakdown of the number of bonded and bond-free scholarships, offered by the Government and its related organisations, to Singaporean and non-Singaporean students.
RAdm Teo Chee Hean: The Government offers a wide range of scholarships through its various Ministries and agencies. These scholarships are devolved to and administered directly by the specific Ministries and agencies. The Ministry of Education does not have data on the scholarships given out by other ministries and agencies. In 2002, the Ministry of Education itself offered 217 bonded scholarships and 26,274 non-bonded scholarships to Singaporeans. The Ministry also offered 144 bonded and 689 non-bonded scholarships to non-Singaporeans. These scholarships were of various types, covering different levels of education.
