Mr Zainudin Nordin asked the Minister for Education (a) what is the philosophy and vision of the National University of Singapore (NUS) as a research and/or teaching university; and (b) how has the recent growing emphasis on converting NUS into a research university affected its ability to meet the manpower needs of the country.
The Minister for Education (RAdm Teo Chee Hean): Sir, the vision of the National University of Singapore is "Towards a Global Knowledge Enterprise, Building Synergies between Education, Research and Entrepreneurship." To realise its vision, the National University of Singapore's educational and research philosophy is to advance knowledge and foster innovation, educate students and nurture talent, in service of country and society.
The NUS vision and philosophy articulate three key thrusts: (1) provide quality undergraduate education; (2) build up graduate education and research; (3) promote innovation, entrepreneurship and industry collaboration. These recognise the rich interplay between the creation, transfer and application of knowledge. NUS hopes to develop a community of graduates and academics who are innovative, resourceful, alert to opportunities and infused with a spirit of enterprise.
NUS has and will continue to train graduates relevant to our manpower needs. NUS believes that the promotion of high impact research and enterprise will support its endeavour to train skilled manpower and nurture entrepreneurs, researchers and professionals to develop Singapore's knowledge industries.
