Asst Prof Tan Kheng Boon Eugene asked the Minister for Education what are the guidelines on the amount of space in the autonomous universities that can be leased out for commercial use, particularly those unrelated to educational purposes, to ensure that adequate space for curricular and co-curricular needs is prioritised over the need to generate revenue.
Mr Heng Swee Keat: The guidelines on the amount of space in the Autonomous Universities that can be leased out for commercial use are set by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA).
Under URA’s guidelines, Autonomous Universities are allowed to provide space for commercial uses of up to 5% of the total Gross Floor Area of their campus or 30,000 square metres, whichever is lower.
