Mr Zainal Sapari asked the Minister for Education if the Ministry can extend the Edusave Scheme to Singaporean students in private schools.
Mr Heng Swee Keat: A Singaporean child can benefit from the Edusave scheme if he or she chooses to enrol as a full-time student in a Ministry of Education-funded school, be it a government school, government-aided school, independent school, junior college (JC), centralised institute (CI), Institute of Technical Education (ITE), specialised school, or special education school.
These schools and institutions cater sufficient places in a diversity of settings for our young to learn core values, skills and knowledge together with other Singaporeans of different races and religions. The options and opportunities are being expanded continuously as Government invests more in education. All Singaporean children therefore have the opportunity to benefit from subsidised education and be eligible to benefit from the Edusave Scheme.
Ultimately, it is important that Singaporean children attend national schools, as this helps to build our national identity, a common spirit, and social cohesion in each successive generation. It is thus our intention to continue to encourage all Singaporean children, as much as possible, to be enrolled in MOE-funded schools.
