WORKMEN'S COMPENSATION ACT
**
(Raising of compensation levels): **
11.
Mr Christopher de Souza asked the Minister for Manpower if his Ministry will be raising the compensation levels set out in the Workmen’s Compensation Act to reduce the disparity between awards for claims made under the Act and awards for common law claims.

Dr Ng Eng Hen: Under the Workmen’s Compensation Act, compensation is awarded to an injured worker regardless of fault. This is unlike common law, under which the burden of proof is on the injured worker to demonstrate that the employer was negligent. Accordingly, the compensation levels under the Act are set lower than potential awards for common law claims. Nonetheless, I am pleased to inform the Member that my Ministry is currently reviewing this Act, including the compensation levels.
