Mr Lee Choon Eng asked the Minister for Local Government, Lands and Housing if he is aware of the recent protest, made by the S.I.T. tenants of Bendemeer Road to the Government through the Chief Minister, against the excessive rentals charged by the Trust; and will he please state what action has been taken in the matter.

Inche Abdul Hamid Bin Haji Jumat: Mr Speaker, Sir, yes, I am aware that such representations have been made. The matter has been investigated and it is considered that, for the type of accommodation provided, the rents charged are not excessive, taking into consideration the fact that at the time these houses were built in 1951, building costs were at their peak. However, the whole question of reducing S.I.T. rents is now receiving the closest attention of Government.

Mr Lee Choon Eng: Mr Speaker, Sir, I do not agree that the rents for S.I.T. houses at Bendemeer Road are not excessive at all, but I am happy that the Minister is considering the matter and will put up some facts later.
