Mr Lee Choon Eng asked the Chief Secretary whether he will consider taking steps with the view to the extension of the period, which closes on 31st January, 1958, for the initial registration of Singapore citizens.
Mr S. T. Stewart: Mr Speaker, Sir, the answer is no. The Government has accepted the All-Party Committee's recommendation to close the initial registration of citizens on 31st January, 1958.
Mr Lee Choon Eng: Mr Speaker, Sir, what will then be the fate of those who have not registered by the target date but who are desirous of becoming Singapore citizens?
Mr Speaker: Is that not hypothetical?
Mr Stewart: It is hypothetical. Sir.
Mr Lee Choon Eng: There is no reply, Sir?
Mr Speaker: It is hypothetical.
