Mr Lee Choon Eng asked the Minister for Local Government, Lands and Housing if he will state -
(a) how many Singapore Improvement Trust housing units were completed in the year 1957; and
(b) how many Singapore Improvement Trust housing units are expected to be completed in the year 1958.
The Minister for Local Government, Lands and Housing (Inche Abdul Hamid bin Haji Jumat): Mr Speaker, Sir, the reply to (a) is 1,274 dwelling units and 70 shops; and the reply to (b) is 4,551 dwelling units and 197 shops.
Mr Lee Choon Eng: Mr Speaker, Sir, will the Hon. the Minister give a directive to the S.I.T. that it should have made allocations immediately on the completion of these 1,274 dwelling units last year?
Inche Abdul Hamid: Sir, no directive is required because it has been the practice of the S.I.T. to allocate houses as soon as they are finished.
Mr Lee Choon Eng: I hope!
