Order for Second Reading read.
5.50 p.m.
The Minister for Labour and Law (Mr K. M. Byrne): Mr (Deputy) Speaker, Sir, I beg to move, "That the Bill be now read a Second time."
This Bill, Mr (Deputy) Speaker, Sir, seeks to substitute the word "caning" for the word "whipping" used in the Penal Code. The word "whipping" is not correct as the whip is not in fact used. Corporal punishment is inflicted with a cane and therefore "cane" would appear to be more correct than "whip".
Sir, I beg to move.
Question put, and agreed to.
Bill accordingly read a Second time and committed to a Committee of the whole Assembly.
Assembly immediately resolved itself into a Committee on the Bill. -[Mr Byrne].
Bill considered in Committee; reported without amendment; read the Third time and passed.
