Mr Thio Chan Bee asked the Minister for Finance to state the number of Government quarters (a) occupied by Government employees, (b) rented out to non-Government employees, and (c) still vacant; whether the renting out of vacant quarters to non-Government employees has been stopped and the reasons for this decision.

Dr Goh Keng Swee: Mr Speaker, Sir, the number of Government quarters occupied by Government employees is 6,280. The number of Government quarters rented out to non-Government employees is 47. The number of Government quarters currently vacant is also 47.

The renting out of quarters to non-Government employees other than the Polytechnic employees recruited from overseas has stopped since July 1960. The reason is that the remaining quarters are being reserved for officers and experts in various technical lines now being recruited from overseas.
