Dato Abdul Hamid Bin Haji Jumat asked the Minister for Finance to state the number of Malays recruited to the General Clerical Service since November 1960.

Dr Goh Keng Swee: Mr Speaker, this question refers to the number of Malays recruited to the General Clerical Service since November 1960. The answer is that no recruitment of any officer has been made in the General Clerical Service since November 1960. Advertisements inviting applications for the General Clerical Service were published on 29th December, 1960. Selection is now in the hands of the Public Service Commission who will make the necessary arrangements for interviews and so forth.

Dato Abdul Hamid: Would the Minister indicate if some of the new applicants would come from the Malay community?

Dr Goh Keng Swee: Mr Speaker, Sir, I have not seen the forms of application, so I can give no indication. But I would say it is quite likely that they would include a number of young men and women of the Malay race.
