Mr Lee Teck Him asked the Minister for Law and National Development if he will expedite the construction of a roundabout at the junction of Tiong Bahru Road and Lower Delta Road to facilitate the smooth flow of traffic from Jalan Membina into Tiong Bahru Road.

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for National Development (Mr Ho Cheng Choon) (for the Minister for Law and National Development): Mr Speaker, Sir, Lower Delta Road is one of the major roads in the proposed road network for the Alexandra Road/Tiong Bahru Road area. Lower Delta Road would be extended southwards to link up with Jalan Bukit Merah extension, which is another major road that will lead to the Kampong Bahru/New Bridge Road area. Traffic lights will be installed at the junction of Lower Delta Road and Tiong Bahru Road when work on the extension to the Lower Delta Road commences. Although the original proposal was to put up a roundabout at this junction, after further investigation it is considered that a traffic light control junction instead of a roundabout would be more efficient for this area. The road reserve for the extension to Lower Delta Road is now being cleared and construction work is scheduled for commencement in early 1968.

Mr Lee Teck Him (Tiong Bahru): (In Mandarin): Mr Speaker, the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for National Development has said just now that originally it was proposed to put up a roundabout at the junction. This was the proper thing to do. But instead he has now said that they will be using a traffic light control instead of a roundabout. In my view, setting up a traffic light control will be a laughing stock, because it does not meet the requirements of the people. In my opinion, there is an urgent need to set up a roundabout.
