HAWKERS' CENTRE AT JALAN TENTERAM (Facilities for motorists)

Dr Augustine H. H. Tan asked the Minister for Law and National Development if it is planned to provide car parking facilities along, and bridges across, the canal adjacent to the proposed Hawkers' Centre to be built near Block 8, Jalan Tenteram, as those facilities will help to bring in business from motorists going along Jalan Toa Payoh.

Mr E. W. Barker: Sir, it is considered undesirable to provide car parking facilities along, and bridges across, the canal adjacent to the proposed Hawkers' Centre to be built near Block 8, Jalan Tenteram, to link up with Jalan Toa Payoh.

Sir, Jalan Toa Payoh will in due course form part of the proposed Pan-Island Expressway, and our traffic experts are against allowing too many ingresses and egresses to and from the expressway.
