Haji Sha'ari Bin Tadin asked the Minister for National Development and Communications if he will ask the Housing and Development Board to consider resiting the proposed community centre at Neighbourhood II of Bedok New Town in Neighbourhood I in view of the urgent need of the residents in the latter area for a centre.

The Senior Minister of State for National Development (Dr Tan Eng Liang) (for the Minister for National Development and Communications): Mr Speaker, Sir, the choice of the present community centre site in Bedok Neighbourhood II was made with the concurrence of the People's Association.

From the planning viewpoint, the present location is suitable being at the centre of the Bedok Constituency, and convenient to both Neighbourhood I and Neighbourhood II. The present site is also unencumbered and poses no clearance problems for construction purposes.

As all the buildings in Neighbourhood II are expected to be completed sometime this year, it is therefore not recommended to resite the proposed community centre which is for the use of the residents in both Neighbourhoods I and II.
