Dr Lau Teik Soon asked the Minister for National Development when the sector of the Sembawang Expressway linking Yio Chu Kang Road and Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 will be completed and whether overhead bridges or underground passes will be built along this sector.

Mr Lee Yock Suan (for the Minister for National Development): Mr Speaker, Sir, that stretch of the Sembawang Expressway between Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 and Jalan Toa Payoh, now under construction, will be ready by January 1983. Its northward extension between Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 and Ang Mo Kio Avenue 5 is expected to commence in 1984-85 to be ready by 1986-87. This extension of the Expressway to Avenue 5 will be sufficient to meet the travel demands of Ang Mo Kio New Town and its adjacent areas. Further extensions of the Expressway northwards to Yio Chu Kang Road and beyond will be undertaken in the late 1980's.

There will be appropriate pedestrian crossing facilities provided along the Expressway Extension beyond Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1. However, as detailed design has yet to commence, it is too early to determine the types or the precise locations of such pedestrian crossing facilities.
