The Minister for Trade and Industry (Dr Tony Tan Keng Yam): Mr Speaker, Sir, I beg to move the Motion* standing in my name under item No. 9 in the Order Paper.

*The Motion reads as follows:

That this Parliament, pursuant to section 7 of the Civil List and Pension Act (Chapter 52), resolves that the Schedule to the said Act be varied by deleting the figures "$385,000", "$15,000", "$1,495,500", "$346,600" and "$87,900" in the second column and substituting the figures "$409,000", "$16,000", "$1,960,700", "$380,900" and "$40,000" respepctively.

Sir, it is proposed to increase the provisions for the Privy Purse and Salaries of personal staff by $24,000 and $465,200 respectively, because of the recent salary revision, annual increments, the 1983 NWC wage supplement as well as higher contributions to the Central Provident Fund and Skills Development Fund.

An increase of $34,300 for Expenses of the Istana household is required mainly to meet rising costs of stores and maintenance. Higher costs also make it necessary to increase the entertainment vote by $1,000.

A sum of $40,000 has been provided under Special Services mainly for the replacement of three refrigerators, three lawn mowers, a knapsack grass cutter and a power sprayer.

It is, therefore, necessary to vary the provisions in the Schedule to the Civil List as follows:-

for "The Privy Purse" from $385,000 to $409,000;

for "Entertainment" from $15,000 to $16,000;

for "Salaries of personal staff" from $1,495,500 to $1,960,700;

for "Expenses of household" from $346,600 to $380,900; and

for "Special services" from $87,900 to $40,000.

Sir, I beg to move.

Question put, and agreed to.

Resolved,

That this Parliament, pursuant to section 7 of the Civil List and Pension Act (Chapter 52), resolves that the Schedule to the said Act be varied by deleting the figures "$385,000", "$15,000", "$1,495,500", "$346,600" and "$87,900" in the second column and substituting the figures "$409,000", "$16,000", "$1,960,700", "$380,900" and "$40,000" respectively.
