Mr Yeo Toon Chia asked the Minister for National Development (a) what progress has been made so far with regard to kerb-side parking during the night along minor roads in public housing estates; and (b) in view of the serious shortage of parking lots in Ang Mo Kio New Town resulting in a number of accidents caused by illegal parking of vehicles, will he consider implementing kerb-side parking during the night as soon as possible.
Mr Lee Yock Suan (for the Minister for National Development): Mr Speaker, Sir, in January this year, the Urban Redevelopment Authority implemented a pilot scheme for overnight kerbside parking at Old Kallang Airport. The scheme provided 118 car parking lots and 25 lorry and bus parking lots. The HDB, URA and PWD will extend kerbside parking to roads with low traffic flow at night. As a temporary measure, both light and heavy vehicles will be allowed to use kerbside parking lots. My Ministry is looking for suitable sites to build centralized lorry parks outside or at the fringes of HDB estates for the parking of heavy vehicles.
Kerbside parking will be implemented along suitable roads in Ang Mo Kio. Additional car parking lots are also being constructed in Ang Mo Kio. By March 1983, i.e. by the end of this month, there will be 1,200 new lots.
