Mr Teo Chong Tee asked the Minister for Communications and Information whether the Mass Rapid Transit system will be extended to Changi Airport in view of the construction of Passenger Terminal II and, if not, why.
Dr Yeo Ning Hong: Mr Speaker, Sir, studies have been undertaken by consultants to evaluate the feasibility of extending the MRT line to Changi Airport. These studies have concluded that a branch line to Changi Airport will not be viable, even with the construction of Passenger Terminal II.
When Changi and the areas around the Airport are fully developed in the future and more traffic builds up, we will review the plans again. When the demand can justify the extension of the MRT to Changi Airport, the MRTC will construct it.
