Mr Teo Chong Tee asked the Minister for Education (a) when will schools be built on the vacant land fronting Blocks 74 and 78 of Bedok North Road/New Upper Changi Road which has been earmarked as a school site; and (b) in determining the names of the new schools, whether the names of the old schools which were demolished in Changi Constituency can be used.

Mr Tang Guan Seng (for the Minister for Education): Mr Speaker, Sir, the site at the junction of Bedok North Road and New Upper Changi Road has been earmarked for the building of one primary school and one secondary school. Subject to financial approval being given, the secondary school is scheduled to be built by January 1992. The primary school will be built later.

My Ministry does consider retaining the names of old schools which have been demolished, where appropriate. If the Member has a specific case in mind, I will be happy to discuss it with him.
