Dr Ho Tat Kin: To ask the Acting Minister for Health, in view of the worldwide concern over Aids, if there is any danger of the plasma-based Hepatitis B vaccine being contaminated.
Mr Deputy Speaker: Dr Aline Wong.
Mr Chew Heng Ching: Question No. 20, Sir.
Mr Yeo Cheow Tong: Mr Deputy Speaker, Sir, as both Questions Nos. 20 and 21 are on the same topic, may I answer them together?
Mr Deputy Speaker: All right.
Mr Yeo Cheow Tong: Thank you. The Government hospitals and outpatient clinics are using the plasma-based variety of Hepatitis B vaccine. It is a highly purified inactivated product manufactured under rigorous quality control procedures complying with WHO standards. These procedures are designed to kill viruses, such as the Hepatitis B or AIDS virus, that may be present. All batches of the vaccines are required to be pre-tested for safety and effectiveness.
The particular vaccine that is used by the Government hospitals and clinics has been in use for the past 10 years in many countries with no known long-term side effects.
