Dr Aline K. Wong: To ask the Acting Minister for Health (a) what is the cost per dose of the Hepatitis B vaccine used in government hospitals and outpatient clinics; and (b) whether he will consider charging the vaccinations only at cost so as to make them more widely affordable.

Mr Chew Heng Ching: Question No. 22.

Mr Yeo Cheow Tong: Sir, the present charges for Hepatitis B vaccination in the Government hospitals and outpatient clinics, in fact, mainly cover the purchase cost of the plasma-based vaccine used. Our cost is lower than in the private sector because of the benefit of bulk purchase. My Ministry will continue to explore for less expensive sources of vaccines manufactured strictly according to the World Health Organization's standards.

Should the cost of the vaccine be lower in future, this benefit will be passed on to the public.
