Encik Othman bin Haron Eusofe asked the Minister for Community Development (a) if he will provide a progress report of the repairs and renovation works which are being carried out by the Singapore Sports Council at the Geylang East Swimming Complex; and (b) when the works are expected to be completed and the Complex opened for use by the public.

The Minister of State for Community Development (Dr Seet Ai Mee) (for the Minister for Community Development): MrSpeaker, Sir, I am answering on behalf of my Minister.

The renovation works at the Geylang East Swimming Complex are undertaken by the HDB. They involve building and structural works and improvement to the filtration system.

As at end March 1989, 40% of the renovation works have been completed. The renovations are scheduled for completion by end December 1989.

When completed, defects in the concrete pavement, perimeter drain, shower points and footbaths will be rectified. The pressure sand filters will be reconditioned. Water circulating pumps, chlorination equipment and underground distribution pipes and fittings will be replaced.

The Singapore Sports Council will need another two months to run in the renovated swimming complex before re-opening it for public use sometime in March 1990.
