The Minister for Foreign Affairs (Mr Wong Kan Seng): Mr Speaker, Sir, I beg to move the motion* standing in my name as it appears on item 11 in the Order Paper.
*The motion reads as follows:
That, pursuant to Article 42 of the Constitution of the Republic of Singapore, with effect from 1st April, 1989, each Deputy Speaker shall be paid a basic allowance of $1,800 per month and all such monthly variable component, 13th-month non-pensionable annual allowance and non-pensionable variable bonus as would be payable to office-holding Members of Parliament.
Clause 3, Article 42, of the Singapore Constitution also provides that a Deputy Speaker shall be paid such salary or allowance as Parliament may from time to time determine. The Deputy Speakers are now receiving a basic allowance of $1,500 per month. With the revision of salaries and allowances for the Speaker, office-holders and other statutory appointments and MPs, it is proposed that our two Deputy Speakers should also have their allowances revised to $1,800 per month.
Sir, I beg to move.
