The following Question stood in the name of Dr Tan Cheng Bock -

Dr Tan Cheng Bock: To ask the Minister for Labour whether he will consider allowing foreigners, who had registered to work in Singapore but who, for some reason, have not taken up employment here, to marry Singaporeans.

Mr Heng Chiang Meng: Sir, Question No. 6.

Dr Lee Boon Yang: Mr Speaker, Sir, my Ministry has reviewed its policy to apply the Marriage Restriction Policy to work permit applicants who had applied but cancelled their applications or did not work after approval was given.

I would like to inform the Member that the policy has been changed since December 1991. Since then, my Ministry has not objected to marriage applications between those non-citizens and Singaporeans.
